Varma, born as Namboori Thakur Tilak Varma, is a splendid Left-Handed batsman who occasionally bowls Right-Arm offbreak. Varma belonged to a financially weak family as his father Namboori Nagaraju worked as an Electrician whereas his mother was a homemaker. Tilak began practicing professional cricket at a very young age in Hyderabad. He began his coaching at the age of 10 years at Legala Sports Academy under the mentorship of Salam Bayash.
Varma was groomed into a successful cricketer under the guidance of his Coach Salaam Bayash. Tilak’s family’s economic condition was poor & they can’t support his cricket training. It was his coach who supported the rising star in his tough time by supporting his spending so that he can get the best training & coaching in cricket. Even Tilak in his recent interviews has mentioned that his coach Salaam plays a big role in shaping his cricketing career. And it’s because of his motivation & support he got a platform to showcase his skills.

Varma made his first-class debut for Hyderabad in the domestic circuit on 30 December 2018. In his solitary Ranji Trophy first-class fixture, Tilak Varma scored 39 runs and has predominantly featured in limited-overs white-ball fixtures. His highest score in the red-ball format is 34 runs and he has remained distant from the format.
Tilak Varma made his T-20 debut for Hyderabad at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 28 February 2019. Varma has featured in 23 T-20 games and has scored 653 runs at an excellent average of 34.36. Tilak scored 215 runs in the previous edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022 at an exceptional strike rate of 147.25. Tilak has powered 5 half-centuries in T-20 cricket with his highest score knock of 84 runs.
Varma also has an eccentric record in List-A cricket. He made his debut on 28 September 2018 at the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Tilak has featured for Hyderabad in 16 List-A games and scored 784 runs at an outstanding average of 52.26. Varma has scored 3 half-centuries and as many as centuries in List-A cricket. His highest score is an unbeaten knock of 156 runs. Interestingly, he has also scalped 5 wickets in his 50-over career. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021-22 season, Verma made 180 runs from his five outings with a strike rate of 87.37, including one century.
Notably, Varma was also inducted into India’s U-19 squad for the 2020 World Cup where India lost to Bangladesh in the finals. He scored a vital 46-run knock against Sri Lanka but did not get many chances due to the powerful performance of opening batsmen Yashasvi Jaiswal and Divyaansh Saxena. Varma’s IPL 2022 Stint
Tilak Varma was bought by the Mumbai Indians squad ahead of the 2022 edition of IPL for a whopping Rs. 1.9 crores. He received intensive bidding from Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was one of the most expensive uncapped players at the auctions.
Varma had an excellent debut season for Mumbai Indians where he ended up as the highest run scorer for the franchise. Varma scored 397 runs in 14 matches with an average of 36.09 and a highest score of 61 runs. In a difficult season for Mumbai Indians, Tilak Varma remained the only ray of hope. He also ended up as the second-placed cricketer in the award for the Emerging Cricketer of the Season 2022.
Tilak Varma IPL 2023 Stint
Notably, Tilak Varma is in fascinating form during the ongoing season of IPL. He has so far scored 147 runs in 3 matches at an average of 49. Tilak’s most commanding innings was the one against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Mumbai’s season-opening fixture where he rescued his struggling side (123/7) by scoring a touchdown unbeaten knock of 84 runs. As a result, Mumbai put up a resistant 171/7 run total but eventually lost the match due to the heavyweight performance by Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis.
Varma had also played a crucial role in Mumbai’s maiden victory at IPL 2023 against Delhi Capitals. Varma (41) stood strong alongside skipper Rohit Sharma (65) as Mumbai anchored a famous six-wicket victory.
