The Trinbago Knight Riders franchise has announced Phil Simmons as their Head Coach for the upcoming season of the Caribbean Premier League 2023. Former West Indies cricketer will now replace Abhishek Nayar who is the incumbent Assistant Coach of the sister franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.
Phil Simmons has paramount coaching experience as he had a couple of stints as the Head Coach of the National cricket team. Simmons resigned from the top post after West Indies’ debacle at the ICC T-20 World Cup 2022. His departure from international cricket saw him taking new roles with T-20 franchises as he previously served as the Coach for Dubai Capitals franchise in International League T20.
Phil Simmons achieved success in his stint with Dubai Capitals
Simmons achieved success in his stint for Dubai Capitals as the franchise successfully sealed a Playoff berth in the inaugural edition of the championship. Simmons also enjoys a highly versatile record at CPL. In his only stint for Barbados Royals, Phil guided the franchise to a title victory.
Trinbago Knight Riders is the most successful franchise in the Caribbean Premiere League. TKR has clinched 4 titles out of the 10 seasons so far. Their last victory came back in 2020 and they will now be eyeing another crucial win under the mentorship of newly appointed Head Coach Phil Simmons.
Trinbago Knight Riders skipper Kieron Pollard was also excited after Phil’s appointment as the Head Coach of the franchise. Pollard has previously worked with Phil when he was the Head Coach of the West Indies national cricket team.
Addressing the media, Pollard stated that he is delighted to have Phil on board, and as a captain, he is excited to work with Simmons. Furthermore, Pollard mentioned that he is really looking forward to this combination and hopes that it derives fruitful results for the franchise in the coming season. Unfortunately, Trinbago had a blizzard season at CPL 2022 where they finished in the bottom rankings. Trinbago Knight Riders will kickstart their CPL 2023 campaign against St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots on August 19.
