Dilshan Madushanka, Sahan Arachchige, and Dunith Wellalage have been added to Sri Lanka’s squad for World Cup Qualifiers 2023 on June 23. Sri Lanka Cricket has included the trio as standby options for the Qualifier event in Zimbabwe. Madushanka has been included in the squad after his impressive outings against South Africa A where he scalped nine wickets in three 50-over matches & then four wickets in a four-day match. His good performances helped him to become the most expensive signing at the inaugural LPL 2023 auction at $92,000.
Madushanka in the squad will give little relief to Sri Lanka’s fragile-looking pace department. Lahiru Kumara has a poor background of breaking down in mid-game while Dushmantha’s workload has been managed carefully. This leave Sri Lanka’s pace department with just two options in the face of Kasun Rajitha and the raw Matheesha Pathirana as reliable seam-bowling options.
Wellalage, Arachchige added to Sri Lanka Squad for World Cup Qualifiers as Stand-By Option
Wellalage further adds depth to Sri Lanka’s squad as the U19 captain is a prolific left-arm spinner which is a major necessity in the squad. Wellalage also offers an extra batting option in the lower order. He has also fulfilled the role of a fielder aptly & is an ideal pick for the crucial World Cup Qualifiers. Coming to Arachchige he was another player who resulted in a fierce bidding war at the LPL 2023 auction & was sold for $28,000. This is a remarkable deal for a player who is yet to make a debut for the national team. However, his stocks have raised on the back of his prolific performances. He has scored three fifties in his last five one-day matches, including two against South Africa A. He could finally make his dream debut with the World Cup Qualifiers. Sri Lanka has already clinched their opening clash against UAE by 175 runs. They will next play their fixture against Oman on June 23 in Bulawayo.
