The Government of West Bengal has reportedly upgraded the security cover of former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly to Category Z. Ganguly has previously served as the President of the Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). The decision to upgrade Ganguly’s security cover was made after his previously assigned tenure of Category Y expired and was up for renewal.
Sourav Ganguly resides in Behala province in West Bengal. Currently, his residence has the stringent cover of 3 Special Branch Police Officers and 3 Law Enforcers as per the Y category security cover. After an upgrade to Category Z, Ganguly will have nearly 8-10 officers protecting the perimeters of his residence.
Sourav Ganguly received threats several times
An undisclosed government official stated that a review was done to ascertain the security threats to Sourav Ganguly and it was decided to upgrade Ganguly’s cover to Category Z. The representatives of the State Home Department visited the Kolkata Police Headquarters and the local Lal Bazar Police Station to take stock of the situation and finalize on the decision to provide Z category security to Ganguly.
Sourav Ganguly is currently traveling alongside the Delhi Capitals franchise for the current edition of the Indian Premier League 2023. Ganguly will come back to Kolkata after the conclusion of the group stage at the IPL on 21st May. From this day, his Category Z security cover will be in place.
Ganguly’s stint as the BCCI President came to an end in October 2022 after Roger Binny took over the prestigious post. Since then, Ganguly has remained distant from taking cricketing positions until being appointed as the Director of Cricket for the Delhi Capitals franchise.
Sourav Ganguly is closely monitoring the performance of Delhi Capitals alongside Head Coach Ricky Ponting. Notably, David Warner & co. are having a disappointing season in 2023 and are already out of contention to qualify for the Playoffs. They are currently ranked last in the standings and will look to come back stronger in the next season.
