Indian cricket maestro Virat Kohli has achieved yet another milestone in his illustrious career, surpassing the legendary Virender Sehwag to become the fifth-highest run-scorer for India in Test cricket. The 34-year-old batting icon achieved this feat during the ongoing first Test against the West Indies at Windsor Park in Dominica.
With his latest achievement, Kohli shattered Sehwag’s record of 8503 runs, which the former opener accumulated in 103 Test matches during his stellar 12-year Test career. Kohli, playing his 110th Test, required just 25 runs to surpass Sehwag’s milestone. He now stands proudly with a total of 8515 runs in the longest format of the game.

Kohli now joins the ranks of cricketing greats who have left an inevitable mark on the sport. Sitting at the top of the list is the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, with a remarkable 15,921 runs to his name in Test cricket. Following him is Rahul Dravid, who amassed 13,288 runs during his illustrious career. Sunil Gavaskar, the first player to reach the coveted 10,000-run mark in Test cricket, holds the third spot with 10,122 runs, while VVS Laxman, known for his elegant stroke play, occupies the fourth position with 8,781 runs.
Since making his Test debut against the West Indies in Kingston in 2011, Kohli has established himself as a stalwart in the Indian batting order. With an average of 48.72 and a strike rate of 55.34, he has accumulated over 8000 Test runs. Kohli has recorded 28 centuries and 28 fifties, with his unbeaten 254 against South Africa in 2019 standing as his highest score in red-ball cricket.

Turning to the ongoing first Test against the West Indies, India showcased their dominance by amassing a substantial lead on Day 2, courtesy of exceptional centuries from openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma (103). With a record-breaking opening partnership, India concluded the day at 312/2, enjoying a lead of 162 runs, with Jaiswal unbeaten on a magnificent 143* and Kohli providing support at 36*.
Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin’s five-wicket haul played a pivotal role in bundling out Kraigg Brathwaite and his team for 150 runs. India’s strong performance has put them in a commanding position as the match progresses.
