South Africa has appointed Malibongwe Maketa as Interim head Coach for their upcoming three-match Test series against Australia. He will fill in the shoes of Mark Boucher who will leave his role after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2022.
Maketa has previous working stints with South Africa’s men’s team where he has served in different roles. He has recently worked as South Africa A team’s coach & national Academy lead. He will take the charge of South Africa Test team as Interim Head Coach from December until early January. He has also served as Assistant head Coach of South Africa’s men’s team from 2017-2019. Notably, Malibongwe Maketa was also a part of South Africa’s test tour of England where he was employed as a consultant in their four-day warm-up match against England Lions & first Test at Lord’s in August.
“We are pleased to name Malibongwe as our interim coach to lead the Proteas in Australia. He is a familiar face to the environment and has worked in the same space previously when he served as an assistant coach,” said Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe.
Makate will take up the charge as South Africa Interim Head Coach from Australia Test Series
Boucher’s support staff including bowling coach Charl Langeveldt, batting coach Justin Sammons and fielding coach Justin Ontong will be retained in the coaching staff for the Australia series. Malingbongwe has previously worked with the entire coaching staff in the past & will apply for the position of a permanent head coach once CSA advertises for the post in the coming weeks.
On the other hand, CSA is planning to split the coaching roles. They are planning to appoint one coach for the Test team who will be actively involved in first-class cricket & the other one for the limited-overs teams. The appointments for the new posts would be completed before South Africa’s Super League Series against England in January 2023.
South Africa is currently occupying the second spot on the WTC 2021-2023 Points Table & a victory in the Australia Test series would increase their chances of qualifying for the WTC 2021-2023 final. Malingbongwe Makate would try his best to guide the Proteas to a series win in Australia &b strengthen his position in South Africa’s set-up.
