The selection committee of Sri Lanka has announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup Qualifiers 2023 which is slated to be played in Zimbabwe. The team has been approved by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Sports & Youth Affairs, Roshan Ranasinghe who will leave for Zimbabwe on June 10.
SLC has also confirmed that Captain Mahela Jayawardene will travel with the National team for the crucial qualifiers. Only limited players & support staff will travel for World Cup Qualifiers to the African nation. And if Sri Lanka manages to qualify for the World Cup 2023 in the October-November window then more members will join the existing team.
“We have to send a limited support staff for the Zimbabwe trip. But, yes, if our team qualifies for the World Cup, we will certainly try to send them,” Prof. Arjuna de Silva, chairman of the SLC medical panel, was quoted as saying by The Daily Mirror.
The Sri Lankan team will head for the ICC World Cup 2023 on the back of a 2-1 win over Afghanistan in the recently ended three-match ODI series at home. The ODI World Cup Qualifiers will begin on June 18 with the finals slated to be played on July 9.
Sri Lanka is placed in Group B along with Ireland, Scotland, Oman, & UAE. Ten teams will participate in the World Cup Qualifiers with the finalists earning qualification for the ODI World Cup 2023. The Sri Lankan team will play two warm-up matches against Netherlands & United Nations on June 13 & June 15 before the original; qualification event. The Lankan Lions begin their group phase campaign on Monday, June 19, in front of the UAE.
