Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the decision to grant an extension to the PCB Interim Management Committee. Shehbaz Sharif is the incumbent Patron of PCB and has the authority to take heavyweight decisions for the apex cricket governing body.
Notably, the Pakistan PM has granted an extension of two months. This is certainly more than expected as analyzed by most of the cricketing experts. The Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) acts as an intermediary between the PCB and the Pakistan Government. The IPC had reportedly recommended to the government to grant a maximum of two to four-week extension to the current Interim Management committee. It is now learned that the extension has been ordered exceeding what had been proposed.
PCB Interim Management Committee will function till June 2023
Interestingly, the IPC had also advised the Prime Minister to name two nominees to the PCB. Of these two, one was likely to be sworn in as the upcoming Chairman. However, the nominees were not named and refrained to be mentioned in the latest circular released by the IPC. The incumbent PCB interim management committee led by Najam Sethi will now function till June 2023. Sethi & Co. replaced the previous committee led by Ramiz Raja in December 2022. They were scheduled to take charge for a period of four months ending April 2023.
The main aim of the management committee led by Sethi was to restore the PCB’s current 2019 constitution place with one that existed back in 2014. In 2014, the realms of PCB were under Imran Khan who had made strategic improvisations to improve the quality of cricket both at the international and the domestic level.
If Najam Sethi succeeds in bringing back the 2014 PCB Constitution, the following changes will be made:
- Pakistan’s domestic structure will continue to function as per the Sheffield Shield criteria in Australia.
- The Management Committee will form the Board of Governors which will elect the Chairman. Sethi is himself in the fray.
- PCB has 10 delegates across the country from all the divisions to ensure interlinkage of regional and zonal level cricket.
