Prominent overseas all-rounders at the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League are set to miss the Playoffs of the ongoing edition of IPL 2023. This is in view of the upcoming World Test Championship Final 2023 and the Ashes Series that is set to take place after the conclusion of the IPL.
Four Australian cricketers of the WTC Final squad are currently a part of the IPL 2023. These are Cameron Green, Mitchell Marsh, David Warner, and Josh Hazelwood. Cricket Australia recently released a statement and left the decision to the player’s discretion whether they want to leave the IPL before or after the championship.
Notably, players with recent injury history will likely leave India before the conclusion of the IPL to manage the workload ahead of the WTC Final. Since Green and Marsh had recently recovered from their respective injuries, they will likely not participate in the Playoffs of the IPL 2023.
However, their participation is also at the discretion of whether their franchises qualify for the knockouts. While Green’s Mumbai Indians have satisfactory chances of qualification, Marsh’s Delhi Capitals are likely on the verge of elimination as they lost their first five pool stage fixtures.
David Warner will stay in IPL 2023 till the end phase
Frontline batsman David Warner will likely remain in India till the end of the IPL. Warner is likely to focus on his batting performance ahead of the WTC Final. Josh Hazelwood who is struggling with Achilles and will also gain some match practice before heading to England. Meanwhile, English all-rounder Ben Stokes will not be available for the Playoffs. Stokes will fly to England in view to practice for the Ashes. Stokes will lead the England contingent against the arch-rivals Australia.
The majority of the Australian Test cricketers are currently featuring at the County Championship in England. Due to this, Australia will be well-prepared for the WTC Final and will only host a short training camp after IPL.
