Ace New Zealand batsman and skipper Kane Williamson will definitely be a part of the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 despite his injury. The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) in consultation with the team management has confirmed the major breakthrough for Williamson.
Notably, Kane Williamson sustained a grievous injury while fielding for the Gujarat Titans franchise at the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League 2023. He traveled back to Auckland for further treatment. Williamson’s participation in the World Cup is likely doubtful but the team management wants the veteran to be with the side for the marquee event. The 2023 World Cup is scheduled to take place from October to November in India.
After a brief medical assessment, Williamson has reportedly been struggling with a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury in his right knee. Williamson was seen walking with crutches after a successful surgery was performed on his knee. He is currently in recovery and rehabilitation and will likely remain out of action for a brief period.
Tom Latham will lead New Zealand in the absence of Kane Williamson
New Zealand Head Coach Gary Stead addressed the media and cleared the air on Williamson’s injury. Stead stated that they are continuously monitoring Kane’s progress and they are still hopeful for his return for the important event in India. Meanwhile, New Zealand will not remain heavily dependent on Williamson’s return. The team management has to keenly find a replacement for the veteran who is highly reliable in the 50-over format. Apart from finding an ideal batsman, they also have to appoint a captain in place of the injured skipper.
New Zealand’s selection committee and team management are closely observing the performance of Mark Chapman who seems to be an ideal replacement for Williamson. Chapman has been consistently smashing eminent knocks in the International as well as the domestic circuit. Meanwhile, Tom Latham will likely lead the Blackcaps in the absence of Kane Williamson. Latham has also been appointed as the captain of New Zealand for the ongoing ODI series against Pakistan.
