IPL 2024 is on the way & franchises have already begun their preparation for the much-awaited season. Amidst the anticipation of the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season, speculation is rife about the appointment of a new head coach for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). As per the sources, Justin Langer, the former Australian coach, has emerged as a strong contender for the position. While negotiations are currently underway between Langer and the franchise, no official confirmation has been provided by either party.
Having led Australia to victory in the Twenty20 World Cup in 2021 and securing three Big Bash League titles for the Perth Scorchers in the early years of the tournament, Langer brings a wealth of experience and success to the table. The discussions between the LSG management and Langer have reportedly progressed through multiple rounds, indicating serious consideration for his appointment.
At present, Langer is not associated with any franchisee in a coaching capacity. This has opened the door for LSG to acquire his services as their head coach. Although details of the ongoing negotiations remain undisclosed, sources within the IPL circle have hinted at a potential partnership.
Justin Langer would succeed Andy Flower as head Coach of Lucknow Super Giants
The LSG management has chosen not to comment on the possibility of a coaching staff change. Should the agreement be reached, Langer would succeed Andy Flower, whose two-year contract with the Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise concluded with the IPL 2023 season. However, no discussions have taken place regarding changes to the existing support staff. Morne Morkel, Jonty Rhodes, and Vijay Dahiya are expected to continue their roles as bowling, fielding, and assistant coaches, respectively.
Under Flower’s guidance, the team, captained by KL Rahul, displayed commendable performance, securing playoff berths in both seasons. Although they narrowly missed out on reaching the final, they managed to secure third-place finishes in both instances. It is worth noting that several other IPL teams are also expected to undergo coaching changes, particularly those that have struggled to perform consistently in the league. As per the sources, some top teams of the league are considering changing their coaching lineup. But KKR which ended the IPL 2023 in seventh position on the Points Table would retain their coaching lineup which is led by Chandrakant Pandit.
As the cricketing world awaits the official announcement from the Lucknow Super Giants regarding their new head coach, fans and pundits alike are eager to see how Justin Langer’s expertise and leadership will shape Lucknow’s fortune in upcoming editions of IPL.
