The BCCI has finally decided not to send the Indian Cricket team to the Asian Games 2023. The postponed Asian Games 2023 will be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8. Notably, from India cricket is the only sport that will not be represented at the marquee event.
Despite several requests from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the BCCI has decided that it will not send Indian cricket teams to the Asian Games 2023. According to Bhupender Bajwa, India’s Chef De Mission for the Asian Games, BCCI stated that the Indian Cricket team has other international responsibilities & thus they can’t play in the Asian Games
“We have entries in all sports except one – cricket (team) isn’t going. They said they are preoccupied. We sent 3-4 emails to them but when we had to send entries to the organizers, they said they won’t go,” Bajwa told Indian Express.
BCCI denied participation due to International Commitments
When reached BCCI for their comments on it the board stated that the Indian Olympics Association sent the email just a day before the deadline for submitting entries. And in the end moment, they can’t pull out of the committed tournaments. They further said that the FTP for Women’s cricket has been finalized & Women’s team will not feature in the Asian Games 2023 as they will face South Africa and New Zealand in the limited-overs series. On the other hand, Men’s team also has their schedule fixed as they will play in the ODI World Cup 2023 during the October-November window.
“We received the mail from IOA just one day before the deadline. At the same time, the BCCI already has finalized the FTP for women’s cricket. During the Asian Games, our team won’t be available as they will be playing in a tournament,” the BCCI official was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
Indian Cricket team has a history of pulling out from the Asian Games. They have not played even in the 2010 & 2014 editions of the games even when cricket was listed in the marquee event. The sport was listed in the 2018 edition of the Asian Games. Meanwhile, BCCI did allow the Women’s team to compete in the Commonwealth Games 2022 where they earned a silver medal.
