ICC T20 World Cup 2024 which was slated to be played in West Indies & USA will now shift to a new venue i.e. England. The decision has been taken by the ICC due to the inability of the USA to conduct the marquee event. The current infrastructure in the USA is not that upto the mark to host ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
With just 12 months left for th tournament., the USA has to meet the required standards of infrastructure set by ICC. And looking at current infrastructure & conditions it looks almost impossible for the USA to meet ICC requirements. As per the reports, England would hop in as the host of the marquee event as England, Scotland & Ireland have been given hosting rights for T20 World Cup 2o23 as per November 2023 release.
According to the reports, there is a possibility that ICC would request England to swap hosting rights with West Indies & the USA. The World Governing Body is mulling hosting the ICC t20 World Cup 2024 in England, Ireland, and Scotland & then giving the hosting rights back to USA & West Indies in 2030. This will help the USA to prepare for the marquee event by upgrading its infrastructure & matching the standards of ICC.
“There is a situation at hand. The current infrastructure situation in the USA is not very encouraging and, likely, the ICC could well swap the hosts for the 2024 and 2030 editions of the event. It will also allow USA Cricket to get the infrastructure in order before 2030 and allow them to set the house in order too. Right now, it will be a rushed process to get the venues ready. England were already allotted the 2030 World Cup and they, unlike other nations, can host an event in June-July,” a source was quoted as saying by News18.
USA has two grounds matching International Standards
Only two stadiums in the USA meet ICC standards & could host ODI fixtures & they are Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida, and Moosa Stadium in Pearland, Texas. Moosa Stadium has hosted 12 ODIs which involved only associate nations while Central Broward Regional Park has hosted 14 T20Is involving big nations such as India, West Indies, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka. Just two stadiums are not enough to host an International level tournament thus ICC wants to give the USA some time to get well-equipped to host ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
