Veteran Pakistan skipper and Prime Minister Imran Khan has been arrested in Islamabad. Khan had been under the radar for a prolonged period and had multiple cases registered against him. He had been reportedly applying for bail at the Islamabad High Court but his arrest unfortunately came in a case for which he had not applied for bail.
Imran Khan was arrested by the Pakistan Rangers at 2:15 pm local time in Islamabad. The details of the offense for his arrest have not been made public but it is believed that it is related to the Qadir University scam that was built by him in 2019 during his tenure as the Prime Minister.
The Qadir University scandal came under the limelight after the National Crime Agency of the United Kingdom seized assets worth £190 Million. An influential Pakistani businessman had been accused of donating the university land in a quid pro quo arrangement during Khan’s reign. Eventually, the UK-based regulating entity returned the land back to the Pakistan government but its whereabouts in the current government are unknown.
Controversies & Imran Khan go hand-in-hand
Imran Khan has a pile of corruption allegations against him that will truly prove to be difficult for him in the coming time. Khan may end up behind bars for a considerable amount of time after questioning and investigating the issue.
The Pakistan Rangers have handed over Imran Khan to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Khan will be under NAB custody for further interrogation. The Pakistan Government has imposed Section 144 in Islamabad where large gatherings have been banned. This will help the police to arrest people in case massive protests are held.
