Back-to-back failures of the Indian team has resulted in the increasing demand for change in Captaincy. After humiliating loss in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals, Indian team suffered another defeat in the WTC 2023 Final against Australia. Though replacing Rohit Sharma as the Captain has been advised by many experts, there are less chances of the change in the leadership panel.
With ODI World Cup 2023 in the lineup, the Indian team have a good opportunity to prove their critics wrong by winning the marquee event. They were able to win the prestigious ICC Trophy back in 2011 & there are full chances of the team repeating the same in this edition as well. The Men in Blue had last won an ICC Trophy back in 2013 & since then they haven’t been hosts to any ICC Event.
India has three ICC titles in their kitty, T20 World Cup 2007, ODI World Cup 2011, CT 2013 & all of them has been won under the Captaincy of Legendary wicket-keeper batter MS Dhoni. Taking a dig on the decisions of Indian Selectors & commentating about change in Captaincy, Dilip Vengsarkar said.
“The unfortunate part is that the selectors I have seen over the last six-seven years neither have the vision, deep knowledge about the game, or cricketing sense. They made Shikhar Dhawan India captain (when tours overlapped and main players were unavailable); it is where you can groom the future captain,” Vengsarkar said while speaking to Hindustan Times.
Just having t20 league which earns crores in Media rights shouldn’t be the only Achievement for Indian Cricket, said Dilip Vengsarkar
Just like several other former Indian Cricketers, Vengsarkar is not happy with several decisions made by the selectors. Dilip said that many people who had served as selectors have little vision about the team & were unsuccessful in choosing ideal candidates who can serve as the leader of the Indian team after Rohit Sharma.
“You haven’t groomed anybody. You just play as it comes. You talk about the richest cricket board in the world, where is the bench strength? Just having IPL, earning crores of rupees in media rights, it should not be the only achievement,” he added.
