Ace English paceman David Willey has been named as the captain of the Northamptonshire T-20 county club. Willey will lead Northamptonshire at the upcoming Vitality T-20 Blast tournament. Willey’s appointment comes ahead of his return to the club after 7 years. Willey was previously a part of the Yorkshire county club.
David Willey was recently ruled out of the ongoing edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Willey had a brief 4-match stint for Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise. Though his IPL tour was short-lived, it was impactful as he grabbed 8 wickets with a bankable economy. Northamptonshire Head Coach John Sadler officially handed over the role to Willey. Addressing the media, Sadler said that Willey’s return will make a significant development in the trailing T-20 side. Furthermore, he stated that Willey has paramount international experience and it will certainly help the youngsters to foster their confidence and display their caliber on the field.

On the other hand, Northamptonshire’s former skipper Josh Cobb was completely shocked and disappointed with the unsudden announcement. It is believed that the decision to appoint Willey as the skipper was not taken by taking Cobb in consideration and confidence.
Agonized Cobb took to social media and stated that it has been his honor to lead the Northamptonshire T-20 side for the last four to five years. He thanked David Ripley for his support to assign him leadership roles and assured him that he will continue to give his best for the club.
David Willey made his maiden T-20 appearance for Northamptonshire in 2009. He has featured for the club in 83 T-20 games and has played an eminent role in the side’s title victory in 2013. Willey joined Northamptonshire in December 2022 with a four-year contract deal. Excited David Willey addressed the media and stated that he is delighted to join the Northamptonshire club and pleased after his appointment as T-20 skipper. Willey had grown up in the county and will likely give his best.
