Cricket Australia announced changes for the upcoming edition of BBL. The upcoming editions will be shortened by 17 matches . The board is also trying to include four match finals from Big Bash League 2023-24 season with the top four teams of the Points Table qualifying for the elimination rounds.
But the confirmation on the structure of four match final series hasn’t been received yet & final decision would be taken once the season begins. Menawhile BBCL’s General Manager Alistair Dobson said that the reduction in number of matches will ensure best performance from the players & action packed cricket for fans.
“A shortened BBL will allow us greater flexibility to ensure we can deliver the best possible fixture for clubs and fans, while providing a platform that allows players to continue to produce the world-class levels of cricket we’ve seen over the duration of the tournament,” Alistair Dobson was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.
The previous edition of the BBL was quite lengthy with 61 fixture being played by the franchisees. The peague comprised of 56 home & away fixtures with four playoffs & finals. However due to lengthy schedule & increase number of fixtures footfalls in stadiums got decreased. Inorder to get more crowd to the stadium & hook attention of viewers Cricket Australia adopted for a less is more approach for the upcoming edition of leagues.
Women’s Big Bash league will continue to be played in same format
In January, Cricket Australia hinted on decreasing the number of fixtures to 43 from 2024-25 season. However, Women’s big Bash league will be played in the same format.
“Whilst no changes have been made to the WBBL schedule, it’s vital that we make sure the tournament continues to be at the forefront of T20 Leagues as the global women’s game continues to evolve at a rapid rate,” Alaistair added.
Meanwhile, upcoming editions of BBL will continue to operate in draft method which will be useful in distributing players among the franchisees. The BBL Players Draft was introduced in 2022 to avoid independent negotiations. The auctions will be conducted prior to the main event slated to be played in September 2023.
