Ace English All-Rounder Ben Stokes has been once again named as the Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World as per the Wisden Cricket’s Almanack that was published today, i.e. 18th April. Notably, Stokes was delegated with the prestigious title for the Third time in the past four editions.
Previously, Ben Stokes has been named as Wisden’s Leading Cricket in the World in 2020 and 2021. Ben Stokes has been highly commendable with the bat as well as the ball. Stokes had a batting average of 40 and a bowling average of 25.66 in the red-ball Test format in 2022.
Ben Stokes has been highly accredited to the success of England’s Test Team. Since Stokes has been appointed as the skipper, England has managed to win 10 of the 12 games. He became the fastest English captain to reach 10 Test victories and broke the record of Michael Vaughan who took 16 Test matches. Apart from Stokes, the appointment of Brendon McCullum as the Head Coach was also highly praised.
Ben Stokes led England to multiple Test victories against New Zealand, South Africa, and India and a historic 3-0 victory against Pakistan. Stokes also starred in England’s famous victory at the 2022 T-20 World Cup final against Pakistan where England clinched their second T-20 title.
Apart from Stokes, a number of other prominent cricketers were named in Wisden Almanack:
- English batsman Jonny Bairstow who scored 681 Test runs in the season became the first recipient of the newly introduced Wisden Trophy for Outstanding Individual Test Performance.
- English cricketers Ben Foakes and Matthew Potts were named amongst Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year. Foakes and Potts displayed an enormous performance for England’s Test team throughout the year.
- New Zealand’s Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell also found a place in the Five Cricketers of the Year backed on their rock-solid batting performance for the Black Caps in the red-ball Test cricket format.
- Interestingly, Indian Women’s team skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was also a recipient of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year after she scored handsomely throughout the year and led India to their first ODI series victory against England in 2009 and also a Silver Medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.
- Australian skipper Beth Mooney was named as Wisden’s Leading Women’s Cricketer of the Year for the second time in the last three years as she helped Australia retain the Women’s Ashes and a World Cup victory.
- Indian batting sensation Suryakumar Yadav was named the Leading T-20 Cricketer of the Year for his exceptional stint in the format throughout the year.
- Legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne was highly celebrated and commemorated in Wisden’s Almanack. He died in March 2022.
