England named the squad for the second Test of the Ashes 2023 series which is to be played in Lord’s. The swashbuckling spinner who made his International debut in 2022 has been drafted into the squad as a cover for Moeen Ali. Earlier in the Edgbaston Test veteran all-rounder Moeen Ali sustained blisters on his injured finger. He was struggling to control the ball due to injury. Thus looking at his condition he will be rested for the secodn Test with Rehan stepping in as Moeen Ali’s replacement.
Though Brendon McCullum was positive about Moeen Ali’s recovery they added Rehan Ahmed to the squad. The 18-year-old bowling all-rounder made his Test debut for England against Pakistan in 2022 returning with figures of 5-48. His stunning spell helped England to win the series by 3-0. Rehan was unable to create a mark for Leicestershire in County Championship 2023 as he could claim just six wickets in 10 fixtures. But still, he made his presence felt for Leicestershire by scoring 423 runs at a strike rate of 38.45 which includes four half-centuries and a best of 90 against Glamorgan.
Ashes 2023: Rehan will join England’s team this weekend before 2nd Test
Notably, Moeen Ali’s injury was a major setback for England’s team as they had no spin options in the lineup. If Moeen Ali fails to recover on time for the secodn Test then Joe Root will be the sole spinner with the England team. Rehan’s inclusion to the squad adds more depth to England’s lineup as he has turned the heads around right on his Test debut in 2022. Though he hasn’t been able to live up to his team’s in County Championship, he can bounce back & cement his place in the national setup by performing well in the India Series.
