BCCI President Sourav Ganguly says that the IPL’s decision to suspend the title sponsor deal with Chinese Mobile Maker Company Vivo due to the growing tensions between China & India is “just a blip”.
After the increasing demand of boycotting Chinese products in India, the BCCI along with VIVO decided to suspend the title sponsorship together with mutual agreement for the upcoming IPL season. The IPL suspended the agreement with VIVO which signed a five year contract with BCCI in 2017 which costs more than 330 million dollars to sponsor the most popular & richest cricket league.
Talking about the suspension Sourav Ganguly said, “I wouldn’t call it a financial crisis. It is just a little bit of a blip”.
“BCCI, it’s a very strong foundation – the game, the players, the administrators in the past have made this game so strong that BCCI is able to handle all these blips,” Ganguly said at an online conference on Saturday, the Press Trust of India reported. You keep your other options open. It is like Plan A and Plan B“, he added.
The 2020 IPL tournament will start in the UAE from September 19th next month. VIVO said that the decision of suspending title sponsorship was agreed mutually by both the parties.
The demand for boycotting products started in India just after the June 15 border clash in which 20 soldiers died. The Indian government has already banned dozens of Chinese smartphone apps and also taken other measures to restrict trade with China.
As per the reports the BCCI is having talks with Indian Companies over Title sponsorship deals but has expected to make less than 60 million dollars which it would have received from VIVO Company. The IPL is a cash rich league which is a huge revenue earner for BCCI & is estimated to generate more than 11 billion for the Indian Economy. The 13th edition of the IPL will kick-start from 19th September & Final is on 10th November in UAE.
