BCCI treasurer Arun Dhamal has said that BCCI would face a big revenue loss if the IPL 2020 does not take place this year.
The cash-rich Indian Premier League is called off this year due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, this would cost more than half a billion dollars loss to BCCI. But cutting the player’s pay was not being discussed yet told a top official to the media. The World’s richest 20-20 tournament is postponed for the first time in its 12 years History after the IPL start date was postponed indefinitely from April 15th. Cancellation of IPL 2020 will lead to a huge financial loss to the BCCI. “The BCCI is looking at a big revenue loss, incase if the IPL does not take place the estimated loss would be close to 40 billion rupees or even more than that”, said BCCI treasurer Arun Dhamal.
India like other countries is very keen to return to competitive international cricket but has to follow the Government guidelines & advice very strictly. “We are not sure that we will be able to commence IPL this year”, he admitted. The One day series against South Africa in March was already cancelled in mid but it is the IPL which generates the bulk of the BCCI revenue & its worth is more than $11 billion for a year to the Indian Economy.
“We will only be able to find out the exact revenue loss once we are sure of how many games we have lost”, said Arun Dhamal. The IPL brand value was estimated alone at $6.7 billion last year by the Duff and Phelps financial consultancy.
Many broadcasters has also purchased the right to broadcast IPL of which Indian broadcaster Star Sports has paid more than $220 million for five years of TV rights up to the year 2022. If the IPL 2020 was not postponed It would have reportedly targeted to generate $400 million of revenue this year.
