In a moment of cricketing brilliance, Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s veteran spinner, achieved a truly remarkable feat during the IND vs WI 1st Test. With the dismissal of Tagenarine Chanderpaul in the 13th over, Ashwin etched his name in the record books as the first Indian bowler to take the wicket of both father and son in Test matches.
Interestingly, Ashwin had previously dismissed Tagenarine’s father, the legendary Shivnarine Chanderpaul, during the IND vs WI 1st Test in New Delhi back in 2011. With this achievement, Ashwin joins an elite list of international bowlers who have achieved this rare feat, including Ian Botham, Wasim Akram, Mitchell Starc, and Simon Harmer.
It is worth noting that Ashwin’s feat comes after Indian skipper Virat Kohli joined the exclusive club of players who have played against both father and son in international cricket. Kohli faced Shivnarine Chanderpaul during the home series against West Indies in 2011, further highlighting the significance of the Chanderpaul family in cricketing history.
Turning the focus back to the ongoing match, Team India has gained control in the first session by claiming three crucial wickets. Debutant Alick Athanaze and Raymon Reifer are currently focused on rebuilding the West Indies’ innings.
Ravichandran Ashwin played a pivotal role in India’s dominance, taking two wickets by dismissing Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Kraigg Brathwaite. Shardul Thakur also contributed by picking up the wicket of Raymon Reifer. Earlier, West Indies skipper Brathwaite won the toss and chose to bat first.
The playing XI for both teams in the IND vs WI 1st Test are as follows:
India: Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishan Kishan (w), Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohammed Siraj
West Indies: Kraigg Brathwaite (c), Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Raymon Reifer, Jermaine Blackwood, Alick Athanaze, Joshua Da Silva (w), Jason Holder, Rahkeem Cornwall, Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican
As the match progresses, all eyes will be on Ravichandran Ashwin as he continues to showcase his skills and make further contributions to India’s quest for victory in the IND vs WI 1st Test. This unique feat adds another glorious chapter to Ashwin’s illustrious career and solidifies his status as one of India’s finest spin bowlers.
