All-rounder Gareth Delany has been ruled out of Ireland Men’s Squad for the upcoming World Cup Super League matches against the Netherlands after suffering from a knee injury.
Ben White has been named as Delany’s replacement. The change was made ahead of Ireland’s squad departure on Sunday. “Unfortunately, Gareth didn’t take part in Munster Reds versus Northern knights match at Pembroke after he sustained a knee injury during the warm-ups”, Mark Rausa, head of Physiotherapy & medical Services at Cricket Ireland”, said in an official release.
“We have ruled him out of the Netherlands tour & will send him for further assessment, before starting him on a rehabilitation program ahead of the upcoming home Internationals”, Rausa added.
White is a leg spinner who has been featured as part of the Ireland Wolves squad that traveled to Bangladesh in February/march & again as a part of the Wolves squad at home against Netherlands A in early May.
The series between Ireland & Netherlands will be played in Utrecht & consist of a three-match ODI series with points won to be utilized towards qualification for the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023. The Netherlands is making a late start to their CWC Super League Campaign due to the logistical complications of the COVID-9 pandemic, they can climb up to the fifth spot on the ladder if they win the series against Ireland with 3-0. Ireland is currently at 10th spot with 10 points & could move up to the second spot with a 3-0 win.
“The three World Cup Super League matches against the Netherlands will be a stern test for the squad as we head into a busy summer of International Cricket. This is the first of three such series which we are playing over the next few months & with 30 World Cup Qualification points available for grabbing we will be keen to claim as many points as we can”, said Andrew White, Chair of National Men’s Selectors.
