The Cricket West Indies (CWI) has passed a deliberate resolution to appoint separate coaches for the Men’s Senior red-ball Test and the white-ball ODI and T20I teams. The decision was taken following the independent review after West Indies blizzard first-round exit from the ICC T-20 World Cup 2022 that was held in October-November in Australia.
CWI Director Jimmy Adams addressed the media and announced the pivotal decision stating that the review included a closer look at the current head coach position roles and the decision has been taken with a unanimous vote.
Jimmy Adams was clear and specific in his announcement. Adams stated that it has now become necessary to split the roles and delegate distinct responsibilities to two coaches for red-ball cricket and white-ball cricket respectively since the frequency of back-to-back multi-format fixtures has increased and each format has unique demands.
CWI adopts split coaching to manage Players Workload
Since workload management has significantly increased due to increasing international fixtures, it has become difficult for one individual to effectively plan a strategy for each format of the game. Due to this, CWI has finally decided to appoint two different coaches for the test and limited-over fixtures.
The individual review system that assessed West Indies’ demeaning performance comprised of Chairman Patrick Thompson Jr., Brian Lara, and Mickey Arthur who provided recommendations to the CWI.
Notably, CWI has not appointed a full-time coach since the departure of Phil Simmons. Simmons resigned after West Indies’ pathetic performance in the 2022 T-20 World Cup. Simmons’s last stint with West Indies was the two-match Test series against Australia where he voluntarily assumed responsibility. Unfortunately, West Indies also suffered a defeat in the series.
The CWI will now hunt veterans of the sport to appoint as the Head Coach of the Test team and the ODI-T20I team respectively. According to the sources, CWI will approach the format specialists for the two positions. An invitation for appointment of the coach’s position will likely be floated in the coming weeks and the shortlisted candidates will be finalized after an extensive interview process.
