WPL 2023 Final, MI vs DC: ‘Aali re’ the Champions of the maiden edition of the WPL is here! Mumbai girls defeated all the odds & became the champions of the first edition of the Women’s Premier League. Mumbai Indians scripted their name in the history of Women’s Cricket by defeating Delhi capital Women by seven wickets at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
A collapse in batting order cost Delhi Capitals their Dream Trophy
Batting first, Delhi Capitals got off to a poor start as they lost openers Shafali Verma (11) & Alice Capsey within the second over of the innings. Then came Jemimah Rodrigues & Meg Lanning on the crease who stabilized Delhi’s submerging ship. They smashed Mumbai bowlers for regular boundaries & kept Delhi’s scoreboard ticking. The moment it felt like things are becoming difficult for MI bowlers, Wong gave her side a major breakthrough by dismissing Rodrigues for just nine runs. Marizanne too couldn’t do much for the Capitals as she was sent packing after a brief stint of 18 runs off 21 balls. Delhi Captain Lanning was the only ray of hope for Delhi. But soon that also came to an end as Meg Lanning was run-out for after scoring 35 runs off 29 balls. This proved to be a turning point for Delhi Capitals as after that they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
There was no stopping for Mumbai Indians as they scalped back-to-back wickets in the 16th over. The lower order comprising Shikha Pandey & Radha yadav showed some resistance in front of MI’s bowlers. The duo slammed Ishaque for 10 runs in the 17th over & continued their onslaught with the bat by smashing regular fours & sixes in the penultimate & last over. Their rewarding 57 run stand helped Delhi Capitals to end their innings at an average 139 runs total.
Mumbai Girls kick-off the Target within 16.1 overs
In reply, Mumbai Indians too got off to a poor start as they lost early wickets in the powerplay overs. Openers Yashtika Bhatia (4) & Hayley Matthews (13) went back to the hut within four overs to put Mumbai Indians Women on a back seat. But then came Captain harmanpreet kaur & Nat Sciver Brunt on the crease & the duo did the unexpected. The duo displayed some power-hitting to take Mumbai Indians total over 50 run mark in just 9.2 overs. However, soon their blooming stand was broken when Kaur was run-out in the 16.1 over. Kaur went back after hitting a powering 37 runs off 39 balls. But her skipper’s dismissal didn’t affect the side as Sciver Brunt along with Amelia Kerr took their side over the 100 run-mark in 16.3 overs. In the process Sciver unlocked a gleaming half century. With the equation reading 21 runs off 12 balls the duo took their team over the line in just 19.3 overs registering a gleaming seven wickets win.
The whole Brabourne stadium was filled with lights & glimmer as the home-crowd welcomed the Champions of WPL 2023, Mumbai Indians Women’s Team.
