Winning the toss at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan made an unfortunate decision to bowl first. Batting first, Lucknow broke the shackles of Punjab’s field and posted an incredible 257/5 runs total in their first innings of 20 overs.
Batting first, Lucknow lost an early wicket to KL Rahul (12) but an absolutely phenomenal innings from Kyle Mayers (54 of 24) compensated for the loss. Furthermore, Marcus Stoinis (72 of 40) took charge and powered a stunning match-winning 89-run stand for the third wicket alongside Ayush Badoni (43). Stoinis further capitalized on his innings and posted another 76-run powerful stand for the fourth wicket alongside Nicholas Pooran (45). As a result, Lucknow breached the 250-run mark and recorded the second-highest total in the history of IPL.
For Punjab Kings, Kagiso Rabada (2/52) starred in the bowling attack whereas Curran, Livingstone, and Arshdeep took a wicket apiece. All the bowlers were really expensive.
Punjab Kings succumbed in front of Naveen Yash’s lethal bowling spell
Chasing a terrific total of 258 runs, Punjab Kings was off to a nightmare start after losing skipper Dhawan (1) and Prabhsimran Singh (9) early on in the innings. Abhishek Taide (66) and Sikander Raza (36) stabilized the innings and put up a resilient 79-runs for the third wicket. However, wickets tumbled for Punjab at regular intervals that kept the game under the realms of Lucknow. Livingstone (23), Jitesh (24), and Curran (21) anchored some quick cameos but their efforts went in vain as Punjab was restricted to 201 and lost the match by 56 runs.
For Lucknow, Yash Thakur (4/37) led the bowling attack and was convincing in his bowling approach. Naveen ul Haq (3/30) and Ravi Bishnoi (2/41) also provided crucial support whereas Marcus Stoinis chipped in a wicket apiece.
