With this victory, Mumbai marched on to play Qualifier II against Gujarat Titans whereas Lucknow Super Giants have been crushed out of the championship.
Winning the toss at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma made an exceptional decision to bat first. Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted a commanding 182/8 runs total in their first innings of 20 overs.
Mumbai Indians were off to a decent start as frontline batsman Ishan Kishan (15) and Rohit Sharma (11) added 30 runs for the first wicket. Cameron Green (41) and Suryakumar Yadav (33) excellently capitalized on the solid start and stitched a stunning match-winning partnership of 66 runs for the third wicket.
Furthermore, Tilak Varma (26) and Tim David (13) took charge and added another 43 runs for the fifth wicket. In the end, a sizzling cameo from Nehal Wadhera (23) helped Mumbai to breach the 180-run mark. For Lucknow Super Giants, Naveen-ul-Haq starred in the bowling attack by claiming 4 wickets for 38 runs in a fascinating spell. Yash Thakur (3/34) provided exceptional support to Haq whereas Mohsin Khan chipped in a wicket apiece.
Akash Madhwal’s five-fer rattled Lucknow’s Batting Order
Chasing a challenging total of 183 runs, Lucknow did not seem comfortable right from the start as it lost early wickets in the form of Prerak Mankad (3) and Kyle Mayers (18). Marcus Stoinis (40) came to the rescue and tried to stabilize the innings but he did not receive adequate support at the other end. Lucknow kept on losing wickets at regular intervals as Mumbai gained control over the match. As a result, Krunal Pandya & Co. were bundled out for a mere 101 runs total and lost the match by 81 runs.
For Mumbai Indians, Akash Madhwal was absolutely phenomenal in his performance as he led the bowling attack by claiming a five-wicket haul. Madhwal’s figure of 5/5 was absolutely thundering which helped Mumbai seize a crucial encounter. Chris Jordan and Piyush Chawla scaled a wicket apiece.
Mumbai Indians are now only a step away from battling out in the finals against their arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings. Rohit Sharma & Co. will take on Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Giants in the second qualifier that is scheduled to take place on Friday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
