LSG vs MI: Defiant Lucknow Super Giants ousted Mumbai Indians by five runs in their penultimate pool stage fixture of the ongoing edition of Tata IPL 2023. With this victory, Lucknow edged past Mumbai to take the third position in the standings and solidify their hopes of qualification to the Playoffs.
Winning the toss at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium in Lucknow, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma made an unfortunate decision to bowl first. Batting first, Lucknow Super Giants were off to a sluggish start but solidified their innings in the later half to post a commanding 178/3 runs total in their first innings of 20 overs.
Lucknow Super Giants was off to a nightmare start after losing frontline batsmen Deepak Hooda (5) and Prerak Mankad (0) early on in the innings. Quinton de Kock (16) also failed to impress with the bat. Skipper Krunal Pandya (49) then came to the rescue and stitched a splendid century match-winning partnership for the fourth wicket alongside Marcus Stoinis (89).
Marcus Stoinis (89) was absolutely phenomenal in his batting performance as his pivotal knock helped Lucknow near the 180-run mark. For Mumbai Indians, Jason Behendorff (2/30) starred in the bowling attack with a great spell whereas Piyush Chawla chipped in a wicket apiece.
Mumbai Indians couldn’t face Lucknow’s fiery bowling attack
Chasing a gigantic total of 179-runs on a difficult wicket, Mumbai Indians were off to a scintillating start as opening batsman Ishan Kishan (59) and Rohit Sharma (37) built a magnificent 90-run partnership for the first wicket. The departure of the opening pair resulted in Mumbai losing wickets at regular intervals.
Suryakumar Yadav (7), Nehal Wadhera (16), and Vishnu Vinod (2) failed to capitalize on the solid start and lost their wickets in quick succession. In the end, Tim David (32) put in his best efforts to anchor the run-chase but failed in his efforts as Mumbai was restricted to 172/5 by the end of 20 overs.
For Lucknow Super Giants, Ravi Bishnoi (2/26) and Yash Thakur (2/40) led the bowling attack with a fascinating spell whereas Mohsin Khan chipped in a wicket apiece.
